Intern Blog 6: Link-Building and Online Directories

Posted by Christie Englert

Hi everyone…it’s about time for another intern blog. I hope you’ve been enjoying them so far! Today I wanted to discuss link-building. There are a number of ways to get links to your company’s site out in the Internet. Buying pay per click ads, setting-up networking site accounts with links to the site, and creating listings in online directories are all ways to build links; however I do not think pay per click ads are as affective as the two others. I already discussed Facebook and LinkedIn in the previous blogs, so let’s focus on online directory listings.

The Internet is filled with online directories that offer free listings for your company. Some of the many sites I have found useful  are Media Brains, Agency Tool, Directory M, Found Locally, Webdesign Finders, OrgAll, City Search, DMOZ, Google Directory, and, of course, YELLOWPAGES. Most of the directories I encountered offer some kind of “free” registration and listing. Several sites advertise their free listings, however when you go to their site, you realize that in order for your company to actually be found in the directory, you must pay some sort of fee. I have also come across sites that offer reciprocal submissions, which means that sites will advertise links for your website if you advertise their website on your page. It’s also good to keep in mind that newer directories will generally be more willing to accept free submissions than more established sites will be. Although these new directories are not the most well-known, over time they will grow in size and popularity. And who knows? If you stick with them, you might have a spot in one of the next big directories!

I think that you have a very valid point when you mentioned that setting up social media sites and building directories is a more effective way to build links than pay-per click. It is a great way to get seen on Google and get noticed by other people without paying. I am an intern at a internet marketing company that specialized in organic SEO. A lot of what we do as interns involves building links and taking advantage of such social media networking sites as Twitter, Facebook, Digg etc.

The interns at Netvantage just created their very own blog. If you want to check it out heres the url :) …http://internblog.netvantagemarketing.com/
