HARO – Help a Reporter Out. Free publicity on a silver platter.

I have been a subscriber to this HARO email list for a few weeks now. I honestly can’t even remember where I heard about it – probably a blog somewhere! Anyway – what a treasure trove of free publicity opportunities!

Peter Shankman, whose entertaining comments lighten up every email and who apparently has his own fan club on Facebook, uses thrice-daily (morning, afternoon, evening M-F) emails to connect reporters seeking specific sources and information for their stories with eager publicists and experts from all walks of life. Anyone interested in the power of PR to grow their business NEEDS to join. (Or if you just like to look for ways to get your 15 minutes of fame.)

He put it well today:

Get this forwarded to you? Why not get your own? It’s free! And unlike some services, I ENCOURAGE forwarding! Share the love, that’s what I say! www.helpareporter.com

Here’s a thought… Everyone out there knows something about something, right? I think one of the main differentiators between HARO and the other service out there is that we’re not limited – We’re not JUST publicists, or JUST agencies. We’ve got auto mechanics, book binders, carpenters, firemen, accountants, lawyers, fishermen, bartenders, makeup artists, detectives, welders, you name it. I think that makes us extremely valuable to journalists, since it massively increases the “expert pool,” as it were. The expert pool is no longer limited to those with a ton of cash who can afford to be included. Reason I bring that up, is that if you’re thinking “Well, gee, can I encourage to join HARO? The answer is, “EVERYONE!”
Everyone’s an expert at SOMETHING, and at some point, a reporter will be looking for that expert.

So go forward, enjoy the 10 queries tonight.

Oh – lastly – On LinkedIn? There’s now a HARO group there, too.
Join up, if you’d like:

So join up yourself – and let me know what you think! I’d love to hear success stories if you respond/are published in anything related to HARO!
